Thank you for visiting my website. Please take a look around to see what I have to offer. My work is split between the making of knives or hand tools for other craftspeople and the teaching of various courses in Primitive Technology.
The tools that I make are made totally by me using a mixture of modern and traditional skills. All of the steel parts are hand forged and heat-treated in-house using a combination of selective hardening and tempering processes, that way I can get the best combination of toughness and edge retention that the steel can offer. I prefer to use locally sourced hardwoods for my handles, but I also work in more exotic materials. Modern parts such as Micarta and mosaic pins are also made in-house.
The tools that I make for others range from small items for basketry, right through to billhooks and specialist tools for various wood crafts. The range that I have on display here is only what I make regularly, if you have a new design for me then please get in touch!
My courses cover a wide range of subjects including knife making, bow making, basketry, greenwood work, elements of bushcraft and various specialist archaeologically orientated subjects. I can teach one-to-one tool/knife making in my workshop or groups of up to 6 using my ‘primitive’ outdoor set up.
Everything happens within a 10 acre woodland in the heart of Devon. My main workshop is off the National Grid and is totally powered using renewable energy. My primary power source is the sun, via a relatively small array of PV panels and a bank of batteries. I have a Lister generator as a back-up for those times when the sun doesn’t shine, this can be run on bio-diesel or vegetable oil.
If you have a design for a knife, no matter how vague, please get in touch with me because I am sure that between us we can create something both beautiful and functional. Likewise if you are interested in a course not listed, please just ask.
